Travelling
in flights gives me an entirely new experience. When I look at the skinny Air
Hostesses, I start panicking and blaming myself for being not so skinny. In the
moment of panic, I start observing the other female passengers, and my smile
comes back to me. There is no such protocol that only slim people can travel in
Airplanes. So, why is this compulsion for Air Hostesses to have a required
height and maintain a particular weight? Aren’t they meant to do more important
jobs, other than maintaining this weight? And, why is our India always obsessed
with skinny Air hostesses? We have international airlines, which concentrates
more on healthy air hostesses, instead of being skinny. They do their work very
efficiently, and are not bothered about particular weight every time. Recently
I had a conversation with an air hostess friend, regarding this issue, and she
told me there is constant pressure for being glamorous. Is glamour synonym with
skinny?
We
have healthy girls in other fields too. Actresses like Sonakshi Sinha and
Vidhya Balan are not skinny, but their acting speaks for them. Isn’t efficiency
the important protocol for any job? And how can skinny be associated with being
fit or healthy? When I hear airlines firing air hostesses for not maintain the
particular weight, I feel distressed.
These
girls not only serve passengers, but they perform much more important work
regarding safety of passengers. In past, we had air hostess like Nirja Bhanot, who
sacrificed her own life for saving passengers. It’s not their weight which
makes them more or less active, it’s their work. This fad only creates
pressure. Not only on air hostesses, but it even creates benchmarks for other
girls. These passengers start comparing themselves with them and follow the
skinny concept.
I
believe, this pressure should be lowered. Being healthy is very important, but
it should not be confused with being skinny. Plus, our airlines should
understand this concept. Focus should be on creating efficient girls, not on
skinny dolls. These girls are very inspiring for others. Their work should be
the guideline to judge them, not their body. This is 21st century,
and we should come out of this concept of skinny.
